We focus on personal development for new and existing students to make the most of university life, offering access to a wide variety of resources such as free courses, subsidised one-to-one sessions and online provisions such as videos, motivational quotes and image banks. We deliver local community-inclusive events such as local clean up of parks and green spaces, food bank drives to support low income and vulnerable members of our local community and other community social events.

CalmStudents offers various networking events for university students across Greater Manchester, including our:

  • 5 Ways to Wellbeing programme
  • Sports and active lifestyle
  • Healthy eating
  • Financial preparedness
  • Mental resilience
  • Local community volunteering

We are active in promoting sports as a tool to improve mental health and wellbeing and overall physical health.

We deliver budgeting and finance advice through our financial independence best practice seminars and practical financial advice, and can signpost to other relevant bodies of support.

We offer cookery and food preparation events to help students develop the necessary skills required to live independent healthy lives which in turn, also encourages good mental health.

CalmStudents offers relaxation sessions, anxiety and stress management techniques, mindfulness courses, and other mental health support.

CalmStudents also promotes exam best practice and helpful revision hacks, to aid in exam preparedness.

CalmStudents offers events taking part in local community volunteering, helps build community cohesion, and helps individual participants develop their CV and stand out from the crowd.

Programmes

RE-freshers
Get straight back into university life at the beginning of the new student year in September. Those three-month summer breaks are amazing, but it can be a challenge to get back into study mode afterwards. Give yourself a quick reminder with our Re-freshers course by setting yourself some goals and a plan for the year ahead.

Skill Up
Get on top of life skills like basic cookery, budgeting your student loan, doing the washing without ending up accidentally tie-dying your favourite top, and other essential student basics with our Skill Up course.

Recreate U-ni
University study can be very different to the way you might have studied at school. It’s a lot more self-directed and needs a different skill set. Develop independent study skills with our course including concentration techniques, exam prep, library basics, tracking down those elusive resources and more.

Coming soon, after lockdown: University can be an amazing chance to make new friends. If you want to widen your social circle this year, come along to our sessions, where we’ll practice mindfulness techniques to ease social anxiety and give you strategies and tools to use to break the ice when meeting new people.

Benefit:

Our workshops and courses help make the transition to independent living and studying easier by filling in skills gaps and giving students confidence in their ability to cope. They’re especially helpful for students who may not have other people in their lives with experience of going to university. Appropriate support means less stress and healthier students, physically and mentally, as well as better learning outcomes because students can focus on study.

Impact:
Students who aren’t struggling with the basics have more time and energy to devote to their studies, meaning they’re more likely to succeed. They’re also more likely to look back on university as a positive experience, paving the way for them to encourage other young people to attend later in life. Having a service like CalmStudents available can be particularly important for young people who are among the first in their family or community to attend university. Our programmes help level the playing field for students from disadvantaged communities and those such as care leavers who may not have other support available, by helping them build the skills they need to succeed.
